INTERNATIONAL GARDEN FESTIVAL

INTERNATIONAL GARDEN FESTIVAL – 19th EDITION 2018
Location: Jardins de Metis, Canada

I was delighted to be invited by ETLA to collaborate on a submission to this prestigious competition. Our proposal was well received and we reached the final short list. We are now exploring future opportunities to realise this project.

Collaboration Project with Landscape Architect practice ETLA

Project Theme:
Playsages II – Go Outside and Play!

Project Title: 'Poetry in the Canopies'

Proposal:  4 curved, elegant, tall, tapering periscope shelters within the woodland, which bring views of skies and tree canopies down to earth and an opportunity to reorientate oneself, seeing beyond the woods and the trees. The forms echo the roundness of trees, and provide comfort and shelter to wanderers, and to reconnect with nature.

Places to stop, dwell, rejuvenate, and gain a more intimate relationship with the world.
These are small structures located on the 4 compass points, north, east, south and west. They offer an alternative, contemplative and playful view of the world which we seldom see, perhaps the canopies of the trees at sunset, perhaps a bird’s nest, perhaps a squirrel foraging. The periscopes would be timber structures, which would be in dialogue with the woodland, merging seasonally through the natural cycles.

Winter sunshine by the sea

I don't normally post about non art related trips but the weather was amazing, for January and I was in photography heaven when I visited the beach today. The sky was clear and the light was amazing to shoot in, creating wonderful colours and textures. Heres just a few from my short trip in the cold!

An evening at the RA

I had the pleasure of attending the Artist Talk on Thursday evening for the exhibition 'Surface Cutting' running until the 20th February. Curated by Eileen Cooper RA the exhibition celebrates the medium of wood and linocut, known as block printing. It was both inspiring and fascinating to  listen to the 14 Artists talk about the journey they had taken to reach the final prints on display and the part process had played in there ideas and outcome. It was wonderful to see such a diverse range of works on display and I would highly recommend a visit. Personally it was wonderful to see some old RCA peers and tutors, the evening really took me back to my art school days!

Workshop at Gyosei International School - Dec 2015

Prior to the 2 person exhibition 'In-between' Tokyo starting, we had the great privilege to lead a workshop for the Kindergarten classes at the 'Gyosei International School.  This creative workshop had the theme of Christmas to coincide with the end of year celebrations the school was having. The aim of the workshop was to create a fun opportunity for the children aged 3-5 years old. It provided the opportunity to utilise and improve their English language skills and learn about the cultural differences between the UK and Japan through play. It was our hope that this would be both fun and informative and provide the children with a more informal approach to art and creativity.

The children enjoyed the discussions about the UK and the traditions we follow at Christmas. As you can see from the photographs below they embraced the creative activities and produced some imaginative outcomes and were very pleased with the resources we provided to continue at home.

The School gave us such a warm welcome and it was a pleasure to spend time with the children. They performed a Christmas themed concert especially for us after the workshop, showcasing their musical talents with both traditional Japanese instruments and English songs, it was a wonderful way to the end the day!

The exhibition ‘In-between’ brings together Japanese artist MAYU and British artist Alison Heath, whom met whilst studying on MA Fine Art Printmaking Course at the Royal College of Art London in 2003.

Although these artists have reached this point from different beginnings each through their own journey, they share a common experience; a sense of detachment to their surroundings that has led them to question the notion of in-between. Standing on the line between these two states all they offer the audiences a chance to escape the everyday and invite them into a space that although holds resemblance to reality will take them on a journey to an imaginary space located in the mind.
